Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) signaled, once again, on Sunday that he might be trouble standing in the way of Joe Biden’s agenda.
Manchin appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Dana Bash. He made it clear that he would not be part of “blowing up” the Senate by killing the filibuster.
“I am not going to be part of blowing up this Senate of ours or basically this democracy of ours or the republic that we have,” Manchin said, referring to the Democratic push to eliminate the filibuster. “If we have a 51-vote threshold in the Senate, the same as the House–the House wasn’t designed to be partisan.” [….]
“The House was designed to be hot as a fire cracker. We were designed to cool it off, and that’s the Founding Fathers. It was a brilliant strategy they looked at, so why can’t we try to make this work?” Manchin continued.
Quote from interview on FOX NEWS
Manchin explained if you blew up the filibuster, you’d have “violent swings” every time a new party took over in Congress, and that wasn’t the intent of the Founders.
He’d previously written an op-ed against eliminating the filibuster and he’s standing by it, which Fox News quoted from.
“The filibuster is a critical tool to protecting that input and our democratic form of government. That is why I have said it before and will say it again to remove any shred of doubt: There is no circumstance in which I will vote to eliminate or weaken the filibuster,” Manchin wrote. “The time has come to end these political games, and to usher a new era of bipartisanship where we find common ground on the major policy debates facing our nation.”
But it’s not only the filibuster on which Manchin is standing firm on upholding norms. It sounds like Manchin is going to give Biden some more fits when it comes to the infrastructure bill. Manchin said in the interview he thought Biden should remove the non-infrastructure things from the infrastructure bill. Apparently, not everything is infrastructure, to Joe Manchin.
Manchin had previously expressed concerns about the infrastructure bill as presently written, as I wrote.
Bottom line? Manchin may be one of the last Democrats left trying to bring a little sense to his party, maybe along with Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ). The rest of the Democrats seem all in to destroy our system.
So naturally, the plan is to to say that this upholding the Constitution is somehow ‘racist,’ as Al Sharpton fooishly stated.
Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) previously said that it was “insulting” that Manchin preferred to uphold the Senate rules rather than maintain a “relationship with the minority of voters in America,” as Fox News reported in its piece. It sounds like he’s right there with the plan to smear Manchin and Sinema.
So, when the Democrats were using the filibuster all last year, were they being racist? Or was it just that they were the minority in the Senate, which the filibuster protects? At what point do Democrats admit what hypocrites they are and how they’ll throw anything and anyone under the bus, if it gets them the power they want?
But as we observed earlier, if they do blow up all the norms, independents are telling pollsters they’re not likely to be on board with it — and they may suffer some serious consequences, come 2022.
Sen. Joe Manchin – Gd bless me!!!!!!!!!!!!!
