NEW JERSEY — Got onions in the cupboard? Check if they’ve been recalled.

Two produce brands issued recalls of their onions because of salmonella concerns, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Potandon Produce and Alsum Farms & Produce Inc. advised people to throw away affected onions, and to wash and sanitize any surfaces they may have touched.

Potandon Produce’s announcement is an update on a voluntary recall issued Oct. 26. The recall affects onions supplied from Keeler Family Farms and sold as Green Giant Fresh. It includes 3 to 5-pound bags of whole yellow onions and 2-pound bags of whole white onions shipped between July 15 and Aug. 22 to a UNFI retail distribution center in Champaign, Illinois.

The recall doesn’t affect any other Green Giant Fresh products or Green Giant canned or frozen vegetables.

Customers who still have the product can return it for a refund.

The Alsum Farms recall includes yellow onions in 3 to 5-pound bags and 50-pound cartons, fresh whole white onions in 2-pound bags and fresh whole red onions in 2-pound bags. The onions were delivered to select retailers in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois between July 13 and Aug. 18.

Their recalled onions were imported from Chihuahua, Mexico. The recall only affects onions labeled “Produce of Mexico” and doesn’t impact any other Alsum Farms purchase.

To date, no one has reported illnesses from the Alsum Farms products, the company said in its recall notice.

The recalls come after a salmonella outbreak that affected five New Jerseyans since May was traced to onions harvested in Mexico, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The outbreak was linked to whole red, white and yellow onions distributed by ProSource Inc. that were imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, in August. As of Nov. 12, the CDC has reported 892 salmonella illnesses linked to onions from the area in 38 states and Puerto Rico.
